In Serbia, there are many different political parties and none of them can govern alone. In last year’s parliamentary elections, the most popular party was Democratic Party which got 26% of the votes. After that came Social-Democratic Party with 24% and then Liberal Democracy with 17%. The rest of the parties got together only to form the opposition. But it seems they are not united enough against the ruling party (which is led by President Slobodan Milosevic) to be able to change the situation in the near future. The BBAS expressed its concerns about the functioning of the current bar associations in Serbia in a statement released on Friday, March 23,

The BBAS also said it sees serious problems with the ability of the current bar associations to defend the interests of the members of the legal profession in Serbia. “This is extremely serious and we think that this situation needs to be immediately addressed,” the association stated. The statement was released after a special meeting of the presidents of the bar associations in the Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Pirot regions.
